Arashi’s Satoshi Ohno (29) drama “怪物くん (Kaibutsu-kun)” DVD box set has beaten US drama “24″ to be the best-selling drama DVD of 2010, figures released from Oricon today have revealed, reports Mainichi Shinbum Digital.
In its first week, the Arashi leader’s drama has sold more than 22,000 copies, 300 more than the “24 season seven” box set, making it the current No.1 in Japan.
”怪物くん(Kaibutsu-kun)” is a story about 怪物ランド(Monster Land) prince 怪物くん(Kaibutsu-kun), played by Ohno, who gets sent to the human world by his father along with his monster companions Dracula, Wolfman, and Franken for training. It is based on the manga series of the same name, created by Fujiko Fujio in the 1960s, and has already been transformed into an anime series in 1968 and 1980.
This is pretty amazing! I didnt know B’z were that big in Japan! Seems like Arashi and Exile are new entry into the charts too!!! YATTA! It’s based on much cds they have sold. I think it’s super cool that Kinki Kids are in too!
Arashi’s Sho Sakurai (28) traveled to Moscow to meet a former head of state and to the Berlin wall as part of his special report for Nippon TV’s 24Hr TV, reports Sports Hochi.
Sho Sakurai will appear on this year’s 24Hr TV, hosted by TOKIO
Sakurai’s special, titled “嵐・櫻井翔が緊急リポート! 世界の貧困と格差社会の現実~マンホールで暮らす人々とは~ (Arashi – Sho Sakurai’s Breaking News! The reality of global poverty and social disparity ~people who live in manholes~ )” sent him to Moscow to interview Nobel Peace Prize winning former head of state Mikhail Gorbachev (79).
Mr Gorbachev is widely known as the man whose actions lead to the end of the Cold War around the late 1980s, early 1990s. After Mr Gorbachev heard Sakurai had been interviewing a wide range of people in different places for his “NEWS ZERO” series “世界平和への祈り (Sekai Heiwa heno Inori, A Prayer for World Peace)” over the past year, the nobel prize winner applauded Sakurai for his efforts.
“I am very happy to meet a responsible person like you.
“I hope more and more people will be able to think not only about themselves, but also about the suffering the people around them are going through, and want to help them,” he said.
After Sakurai had introduced himself in Russian, Mr Gorbachev pushed aside Sakurai’s prepared notes.
“I want to hear about your opinions,” he told a confused Sakurai.
The interview went on for more than 30 minutes, during which the two talked about poverty, economic instability, and peace operations.
It has been reported Sakurai was still shaking after his interview.
“It was an incredible priviledge to have met a person I watched on the news as a young boy,” he said.
His latest adventure had sent him reporting from Moscow to the Berlin wall, and to Romania.
“It’s been 20 years since the Cold War ended. How has the world changed. I hope I can make people in Japan think about how one person’s situation can affect others,” he said.
“嵐・櫻井翔が緊急リポート! 世界の貧困と格差社会の現実~マンホールで暮らす人々とは~ (Arashi – Sho Sakurai’s Breaking News! The reality of global poverty and social disparity ~people who live in manholes~ )” will air on “24時間テレビ33「愛は地球を救う」(24Hr TV 33 ‘Love Saves the Earth’)” on August 29 in Japan.

TOKIO’s Tomoya Nagase (31) is once again teaming up with screenwriter Kankuro Kudo (39) for a new drama series this summer. This will be their third one together, after “Ikebukuro West Gate Park” (2000) and “Tiger & Dragon” (2005).
Titled “Unubore Deka” (“Conceited Detective”), the show is an original comedy about an unusual detective (Nagase) who has a habit of falling in love with every female suspect, and his conceit leads him to believe that they are also in love with him. When he finds evidence of their crimes, he confronts them with an arrest warrant and a marriage proposal at the same time, giving them a choice between the two. Although his actual name will apparently not be mentioned during the show, he is known to everyone as “Unubore” for his conceit.
TBS says that they are lining up big-name actresses to play the guest role of the suspect for each episode. The network also hinted that there’s even a case where the guest will be a male actor.
The regular supporting cast features Toma Ikuta (25) as an actor who is Unubore’s friend, Mika Nakashima (27) as Unubore’s ex-girlfriend, and Toshiyuki Nishida (62) as Unubore’s father. The detective frequents a bar where he and a group of acquaintances are known as the “Unubore 5,” consisting of Nagase, Ikuta, Jun Kaname (29), Ken Yahagi (38), and Mitsugoro Bando (54).
“Unubore Deka” will air on Friday nights at 10:00pm, starting in July.

Although its because they’ll have a new program on Saturdays 10pm i think starting April. *sigh* I still really love shukudai-kun alot.. It was the 1st variety program that got me hooked on forever.. The silly Ai-Land, all the silly and stupid games that made Arashi look like a fool but made us all laugh so much.. *sigh* Just feel like its a waste.. So many classic moments have come out from this show.. *SIGH* really sad man…. i wonder what other programs will let them do extreme silly things.
With the popular boy band Arashi getting another prime time show this spring, NTV has decided to end the group’s late night show “Arashi no Shukudai-kun.” The network announced that the final episode will air on March 22.
“Arashi no Shukudai-kun” has been on the air since October 2006, and has received high ratings despite its time slot.
NTV has confirmed that popular group Arashi will have a new prime time show starting this spring. Tentatively titled “Arashi ni Shiyagare,” the show will occupy the Saturday 10:00pm time slot left open by “Enta no Kamisama,” which is ending in March.
The program is described as an improvised entertainment variety show. Each episode will feature a guest celebrity, but the members of Arashi will not be told in advance who the guest is nor what the guest will be doing on the show.
It appears that the main segment of the show will have a different guest each week to teach the Arashi members an entertainment skill in various fields, including comedy, rakugo, and kabuki. Called “The Set,” this segment will take place on various “sets,” such as a theater or kabuki stage.
“Arashi ni Shiyagare” premieres in April. Arashi already hosts two other shows during prime time.

Oricon’s year-end sales rankings for 2009 are out, and the results confirm that Arashi is the top selling artist of the year. They had the #1 single, the #1 album, the #1 music DVD, and were #1 for the first time in artist total sales. In the 42 years of Oricon’s history, no one else has topped all four categories in the same year.
Counting sales of singles, albums, music DVDs, and music Blu-ray Discs, Arashi grossed a total of more than 14.46 billion yen. At #2 this year was EXILE, who topped the list in 2008 with 19.58 billion yen in total sales.
In single sales, Arashi had the #1, #2, #3, and #5 releases, with “Believe / Kumori Nochi, Kaisei” in front at nearly 657,000 units sold. The only other artists to occupy the top three spots were Pink Lady in 1978 and Hikaru Genji in 1988. Arashi are the first to have four of the top five, as well as the first to hold the top two spots in back-to-back years.
Their “All the BEST! 1999-2009” album sold over 1.43 million copies. In DVD sales, they were #1 and #2 with “5×10 All the BEST! CLIPS 1999-2009” (591,000) and “ARASHI AROUND ASIA 2008 in TOKYO” (428,000).
More complete ranking lists are available on the Oricon website.

A pioneering Japanese design firm is making a name for itself by creating unique barcodes to enliven packaging.

While most Western manufacturers focus their marketing on the front of a product, a growing number of Japanese firms are branding the barcodes on the reverse as well.
The black and white etchings contain sufficient detail to be recognised by scanners, while also incorporating the firm’s logo or an image associated with the product.
Among the companies to employ the services of Design Barcode Inc are the car manufacturer Ford and major Japanese tea and noodle brands. More of the firm’s creations are below.
Currently celebrating their 10th anniversary, Johnny’s Entertainment group Arashi has seen their popularity skyrocket in the past year. It seems they have no intention of slowing down as they have been added to the lineup for NHK’s Red and White Singing Contest.
Their newest single ‘My Girl’ has also become a hit, successfully earning them the top 4 spots on this year’s Oricon singles chart with the highest first week sales. ‘My Girl’ has reached number 3 on the charts, just after ‘Ashita no Kioku / Crazy Moon’ and ‘Believe / Kumorinochi Kaisei’. The fourth spot also belongs to them with their previous single ‘Everything’. They seem to have effortlessly dominated the sales in the singles chart for 2009.
In addition, fans from all over the world were thrilled when they announced their appearance on NHK’s Red and White Singing Contest. It is the first time that Johnny’s Entertainment will be having four groups perform on the show. Arashi’s popularity has continued to rise within this year, especially riding on the success of individual projects from all five members. To be invited to perform at the 60th Red and White Singing Contest during their 10th year seems very appropriate.
The latest KinKi Kids single, “Swan Song,” ranked #1 on the charts this past week with more than 160,000 in sales. This is their 29th consecutive number-one single, starting with their debut in 1997.
On the albums chart, Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” was #1, selling close to 74,000 copies. Also in the top ten were The Gospellers (#2), The Cro-Magnons (#5), JAY’ED (#6), Junichi Inagaki (#9), and Chihiro Onitsuka (#10).
Meanwhile, Arashi‘s new DVD “5×10 All the BEST! CLIPS 1999-2009” took the top spot on the overall DVD charts. At 428,000 copies sold, it set the record for highest first-week sales of a music DVD, surpassing the 374,000 of KAT-TUN‘s “Real Face Film” in 2006.
Japanese idol group Arashi held a three hour live special yesterday to celebrate their 10th anniversary. The special, which began at 7pm, was titled ‘Odoroki no Arashi! The Century’s Biggest Experiments! Impossible Feats SP and Miracle Experiments Live Broadcast!’ (from NTV). According to numbers from video research, the average ratings from the Kanto region was at 23.5%, peaking at a record of 29.8%. Airing at the same time was the Japan Series baseball game between the Yomiuri Giants and the Nippon Ham Fighters, which had average ratings of 16.4% on Fuji TV.
The three-hour live broadcast wrapped up Arashi CHALLENGE★week (from October 25th to November 1st), in which Arashi took over NTV studios for more than 50 hours of broadcast to mark their 10th anniversary. They specially prepared a flying stage and introduced 3D effects to their performance by using enhanced glasses.
In the Japan Series, Nippon Ham pitcher Darvish made his return to the mound after battling injuries. In addition, the drama ‘JIN’ airing on TBS at 9pm, maintained the same ratings from the previous week at 17.2%
What an interesting drama!!! I must say very interesting as well as clever. I was never bored at all!!! From the character introduction to the cases, by each episode, i was getting more and more intrigued by the story and plot. I finished watching the drama in less than 2 days. haha.. i even sacrificed sleep just to watch this. haha.
This drama Boss has 11 episodes. I really like the main character Osawa Eriko played by Amami Yuki. Her character is very clever and smart. And she’s hilarious! haha. Also she brings together her separated team into one great team. This is like a detective/police story.
The last part of the story will probably surprise u. It surprised me. When you think its this way, its actually THAT way.. haha.. u’ll get it when u watch it. If u like cool detective/police stories, then you’ll like this. This is abit more with some humour.
On September 15th 2009, Arashi celebrated their 10th anniversary!
Even after 10 years, they continue to have an avid fan base, and there are no signs of their popularity diminishing.
Along with their careers as singers, they’re riding high on their successes as actors and newscasters as well.
10 years ago on September 15th the members had marked their debut with a press conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. To commemorate the special day, goo [a Japanese search engine and web portal] conducted a survey in which they asked fans their favorite Arashi song. Let’s take a look at the ‘Favorite Arashi Singles Ranking’!
The No.1 song was ‘Love so sweet’, and ‘One Love’ came in at No.2. ‘Love so sweet’ was the main theme song for the TBS Friday Night drama ‘花より男子2 (リターンズ) / Boys over Flowers 2 (Returns)’, and ‘One Love’ was the title theme song for the movie ‘花より男子ファイナル / Boys over Flowers F (Final)’. Matsumoto Jun appeared in both the drama and the movie. Needless to say, these two singles were immensely popular. Their debut single ‘A・RA・SHI’ took the No.3 spot. Arashi became the special supporters of the 1999 FIVB Men’s World Cup (Volleyball Championship), and ‘A・RA・SHI’ was the main theme song for Fuji TV’s live coverage of the tournament. In just a week after its release, ‘A・RA・SHI’ sold nearly 560,000 copies. At that time that was a new record for a debut single. The song is undoubtedly the cornerstone of Arashi. ‘One Love’ and ‘truth/風の向こうへ (truth/Kaze no Muko e)’ (ranked in at No.4) were the No.1 and No.2 singles of the 2008 Oricon Ranking. The singles epitomized the group’s ever-growing popularity.
How many of your favorite Arashi songs ranked in? Check below for the whole list!
As was mentioned before, in addition to their music the Arashi members’ have thrived in an assortment of different fields. Fans must have high hopes for Arashi as a group, and also for the individual members. It will be interesting to see how much they will continue to evolve and further their careers!

As expected, the boy band Arashi dominated the charts this past week with their collection “All the BEST! 1999-2009.” The album sold 753,000 copies, setting their own personal record for first-week sales.
The album also sets the record for opening week sales during the 2009 period. The previous highest was Mr.Children’s “SUPERMARKET FANTASY,” which sold 708,000 copies when it was released this past December. That album has already become a million seller, suggesting that Arashi’s album will likely achieve that milestone as well. If it does, it will be their first million seller.
Aside from Arashi, the week’s top ten included new releases from Big Bang (#3), MINMI (#5), Denki Groove (#6), and Hi-Fi CAMP (#8).
On the singles chart, Kiyoshi Hikawa also set a record. His “Tokimeki no Rumba” sold 68,000 copies to become his third chart-topper, which is the most for a solo enka artist.
TOKIO (#3), Yuko Hara (#5), The Gospellers (#7), Tatsuro Yamashita (#8), and Ayabie (#10) also entered the top ten.
Fans of popular boy band Arashi will now be able to watch the group every week during golden time. Their show “VS Arashi” on Fuji TV is moving from its Saturday afternoon time slot (12:59pm-1:30pm) to an hour-long time slot on Thursday nights at 7:00pm. This will be Arashi’s first show during golden time hours.
“VS Arashi” has been on the air since April 2008. Each episode features Arashi competing against different guest celebrities in a variety of games, such as “Falling Pipe” and “Cliff Climb.”
The show will air in its new time slot starting this October.
